The 1839 is probably the rarest single issue of the Classic Head quarter eagle; less often seen, in fact, than the more highly-priced branch mint issues such as the 1838-C and 1839-D.
This naturally toned green-gold example is well-detailed with a few minor scuffs in the fields which are consistent with the grade.
Only two AU50s have been sold at auction since the summer of 2011 and both were graded by NGC. One brought $2,415 while the other realized $2,585.
A pleasing example of this “sleeper” issue.
