Variety 1-A.

The 1839-D is a very significant coin from a numismatic perspective as it is the first quarter eagle from this mint and it is one-year type featuring the Classic Head design with the mintmark placed on the obverse. It is available in VF and EF grades but I’d estimate that fewer than 10% of the survivors have original surfaces and color.

This is the nicest EF example of this issue which I have handled in a few years. It shows deep, even green-gold color which is the result of its not having been cleaned or processed. The strike is a bit weak at the centers as usual but the detail is very acceptable for the grade and the surfaces are choice with no overly detracting marks noted.

Only four examples graded EF45 by a major service have been auctioned since 2008. The most recently sold EF45 1839-D quarter eagle with CAC approval was Heritage 1/14: 6421 at a strong $8,813. I feel that the present coin is far superior and much more original.

While certainly not the rarest quarter eagle from this mint, the 1839-D has the highest multiple levels of demand and I could probably sell ten examples which looked like this coin if I could only find them!

CAC has approved five in this grade with seven finer.
