CHOICE COLLECTOR GRADE 1839-C QUARTER EAGLE
Variety 3. Recut Date, reverse of 1839. Perfect dies and rare as such.
The 1839-C is one of just two Charlotte quarter eagle which employs the popular Classic Head design. It is more available than its counterpart the 1839-C but most all the examples I see in third-party holders are overgraded and unappealing due to numismatic abuse.
This choice, evenly worn example shows pleasing even deep russet color as an uncleaned 1839-C should. The wear is even and the surfaces are choice with most of the marks which are present clustered in the upper left obverse field. The strike is sharp due to the early die state and this is a really choice piece overall.
Remarkably, just two PCGS EF40′s have sold at auction since 1999 and the last one, not approved by CAC, realized $4,888.
Choice, affordable 1839-C quarter eagles are always in demand and this is one of the nicer ones I’ve had in stock for some time.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with another 12 finer.
