The 1901-O is one of the more available With Motto eagles but it is much scarcer in higher grades than the 1903-O and 1904-O. It is extremely scarce in properly graded MS64 and essentially unknown in grades higher than this. There are two or three Gems known, the finest of which, ex Eliasberg: 824, is a piece which was obtained directly from the New Orleans mint by John Clapp, Sr.
This is among the finest examples of this date that I have owned in many years. It is fresh and original with nice two tone orange-gold and greenish colors and rich, frosty luster on the obverse and reverse. There is a small contact mark near the nostril and a light scrape above the date but this piece is not all that far removed from consideration at the Gem level.
There have been just five auction records for MS64 1901-O eagles since 2004. The last of these, for a coin graded MS64+ by PCGS and approved by CAC, brought $9,488 as Heritage 3/12: 4138.
If it were available, a PCGS/CAC 1901-O eagle would be valued at $20,000 in my estimation.
CAC has approved 3 in this grade with none finer.
