The 1894-O is scarcer than the 1892-O and 1893-O eagles in terms of overall rarity. It is scarce in properly graded MS62, very scarce in MS63 and extremely rare in grades above this.
This flashy example, while a bit softly struck for the date, is much cleaner than usual and it exhibits pleasing natural medium orange-gold color. A series of tiny marks on Liberty’s cheek (the result of contact with another coin) limit the grade.
No CAC approved MS62s have ever sold at auction. Only one PCGS MS62 has sold at auction since September 2012 and it brought $2,056 as HA 6/13: 5818.
If available, a PCGS MS63 with CAC approval would probably bring somewhere north of $7,000, making this nice MS62 a good value at around 1/3rd of the price.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with two finer.
