Old Green Label Holder. By today’s standards this coin appears to grade a point higher.
This overlooked date is the scarcest Philadelphia Liberty Head eagle struck after 1877 with a mintage of only 4,400 business strikes. There are around 300 known including three or four dozen in Uncirculated; mostly from Europe and nearly always in the MS60 to MS61 range. This date is very scarce in MS62 and seemingly unknown above this range.
This totally original example shows nice natural orange-gold “Euro” color with some darker hues seen on the highlights. The luster is full and there is no wear. The fields are less densely marked than normal. There is a long, shallow mark (mint-made?) above Liberty’s eye and brow and a reverse scrape over TE in TEN.
The last PCGS MS61 example to sell at auction was a non-CAC piece which realized $3,450 as DLRC 3/11: 561. Only one other PCGS MS60 has sold at auction since 1998.
A nice example of this scarce, overlooked date.
CAC has approved one in this grade with seven higher.
