After a four year hiatus, production of eagles resumed at the New Orleans mint. The 1888-0 is moderately scarce in MS62, rare in MS63 and all but unknown finer.
This slightly prooflike example shows attractive rich orange-gold color and is much cleaner than usual for the date and grade. I have seen inferior 1888-O eagles in MS63 holders.
Two NGC MS62 examples with CAC approval sold for $1,645 and $1,763, respectively, in two different Heritage auctions this year.
A PCGS MS63, if available, would sell for close to 3x the price of this nice MS62.
CAC has approved 12 in this grade with 4 finer.
