While overshadowed by the rare low mintage 1879-O and 1883-O bookends, the 1881-O eagle is a scarce issue in its own right with just 8,350 struck. It is not often seen above AU50 to AU53 and even less frequently with natural color and surfaces.
From its appearance, it is likely that this coin was sourced in Europe as it shows deep green-gold color with the obverse a bit more intense than the reverse. There is some semi-prooflike finish seen and both sides have uncommonly choice fields for this issue with no really deep or detracting marks.
The last NGC AU53 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 2/13: 4914 which brought $2,115. A PCGS AU53, ex Heritage 8/12: 4662, sold for $2,938. Neither coin was approved by CAC.
As with the 1880-O and 1882-O, this date remains undervalued despite having shown nice price increases in the last half a decade.
This is the only example in this grade with CAC approval; five finer pieces have been approved as well.
