The 1881-CC is the most available Carson City eagle struck prior to 1890. This is partly due to its comparably high mintage of 24,015 and also due to the fact that hundreds of comparatively high grade examples have been found in Europe. Nice AU58s are not easily found and are popular due to their affordability.
This coin was almost certain sourced in Europe and it shows a nice original appearance with rich orange-gold and greenish toning. There is little actual wear with some rub on the high spots doubtlessly the result of bag friction when it was transported overseas in a bag loose with other coins.
The last PCGS AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 6/12: 5142 which realized $3,738.
A very attractive example which should be of interest to date and type collectors.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 11 finer.
