Old Green Holder. By today’s grading standards, this coin, in my opinion, is close to–if not fully-an EF40.
The 1874-S is yet another overlooked date in the 1866-1877 run of San Francisco eagles. There are around 125 known in all grades but most are in the VF-EF range and are seldom seen with natural color and surfaces.
This very pleasing example show rich natural russet color with darker highlights. The surfaces are clean for the date and grade and the mintmark, while very small, is fully visible.
Only two PCGS VF30 1874-S eagles have sold at auction since 2008.
CAC has approved one in this grade with eight finer.
