The 1874 is the only date in the Liberty Head eagle series struck between 1862 and 1877 which is sometimes available in Uncirculated. It becomes scarce in MS62 and it is rare finer than this.
This crusty “Euro” example is frosty with deep natural orange-gold and rose color. The strike and luster are excellent but there are some clusters of marks on both sides which limit the grade.
The last PCGS MS61 example to sell at auction was Heritage 7/12: 5002, a coin which was not approved by CAC, that brought $1,725.
CAC has approved two in this grade with four finer.
