The 1872-S eagle is comparable in rarity to the 1871-S and 1874-S but a bit more available than the underrated 1873-S. There are slightly fewer than 200 known from an original mintage of 17,300. Most examples are found in the EF40 to AU50 range but are usually dipped, bright and unattractive.
This choice, original piece is highlighted by exceptional reddish-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. The wear is even and gentle and the surfaces are extremely choice for the grade. This is one of the few 1872-S eagles I have seen with genuinely good eye appeal.
No EF45 1872-S eagles have sold at auction since 2012 and no CAC approved EF45 has ever crossed the block.
Great value at less than $2,000!
