A miniscule mintage of just 1,620 business strikes makes the 1872 an avidly-sought rarity in the Liberty Head eagle series. There are around 50 pieces known in all grades including four or five Uncirculated coins from a small hoard found many years ago.
This is a pleasing coin for the date and grade with some light russet color which deepens towards the borders. The surfaces show the usual assortment of small ticks in the fields but none of these are deep or terribly detracting.
The last PCGS AU50 example of this date to sell at auction brought $8,225 as Heritage 4/13: 5900. In my opinion, the present example is considerably more appealing.
The very rare low mintage Philadelphia eagles from this era have become popular with collectors in recent years but I find the 1872 to be undervalued in comparison to the 1873, 1876 and 1877.
