The 1870-S is a very scarce but little known issue in the San Francisco Liberty Head eagle series. Only 8,000 were produced and probably fewer than 100 are known today with most in the VF-EF range.
This is a remarkably evenly worn example with almost enough detail to grade it EF40. It shows nice natural russet color with plenty of dirt in the recesses on the obverse and the reverse. Some weakness of strike at the central obverse should not be confused with wear.
No slabbed VF35 example of this date has ever sold at public auction.
There are not many truly rare dates left in this series for which you can buy an attractive, problem-free PCGS piece for less than $3,000 and I think that this makes the 1870-S I’m offering here an especially good value for the collector who appreciates such coins.
