The 1868 is the most available Reconstruction Era eagle from the Philadelphia mint but it is still a relatively scarce issue with under 200 known from the original mintage of 10,630. It is not hard to locate in the lowest AU grades but properly graded AU58′s are extremely scarce. I am aware of only one Uncirculated 1868 eagle, a coin graded MS62 by PCGS.
This coin is mostly prooflike on the obverse and more satiny in texture on the reverse. Both sides are moderately abraded and show light yellow-gold hues. There is a touch of rub limited to the cheek of Liberty and the appearance is far above average for the issue.
Only two PCGS AU58 1868 eagles have been sold at auction since 2007. The last of these, not approved by CAC and possessing funky orange color, brought $9,988 as Heritage 11/13: 3872.
This is clearly a Condition Census example of the date and it represents an important opportunity to acquire an impressive example.
CAC has approved five in this grade with none finer.
