All of the Liberty Head eagles struck at the San Francisco mint during the Civil War years are very scarce to rare. The 1861-S is probably the most obtainable of these six issues (this includes two made in 1865) but it is still represented by no more than 75 to 85 known from an original mintage of just 15,500. This was an issue which circulated extensively in the Old West and many 1861-S eagles are found with extensive wear.

This well worn but pleasing example shows natural russet color with some deepening at the borders. It is problem-free and actually quite attractive with just some minor ticks in the left obverse field and detail which is slightly sharper than the assigned grade.

A very comparable NGC VF30, without CAC approval, sold for $4,700 as Heritage 1/13: 7342.

After many years of neglect, rare date San Francisco gold in collector grades has become popular and prices have risen significantly in the last five years.

CAC has approved just this one coin in VF30 with seven higher.
