Old Green Holder. By today’s standards this coin appears to grade at least VF25 but it has a few issues which are mentioned below.
The 1861-S is the most available of the rare Civil War eagles from San Francisco. Of the 15,500 struck around 75-85 are known with most in lower grades. This date is unknown in Uncirculated and it is very rare in AU, especially with original color and surfaces.
This coin has an extremely cosmetic obverse with the sharpness of a Choice VF and pleasing russet color. On the reverse, there are a few light old pin scratches below the right wing and some possible tooling there as well.
The only relatively comparable 1861-S eagle to sell at auction in recent years was an NGC VF25–not approved by CAC–which sold for $2,990 as Heritage 2/11: 4535.
CAC has approved two in this grade with seven finer.
