The 1861 is the only relatively available Civil War era Liberty Head eagle and it remains affordable in the higher circulated grades. It is not really scarce in AU55 to AU58 but most examples in this range are bright and bagmarked; original examples are not often seen.
This very choice example has a fully original “dirty old gold” appearance with considerable luster below the antique gold hues. There are some scuffs in the inner left obverse field but the overall appearance is far above average for the grade.
Since the end of 2009, there have been 17 auction appearances for this issue in AU55 since the end of 2009 but only four were graded by PCGS. A non-CAC piece in an old green label holder brought $3,290 as Heritage 1/13: 7341.
Good value for the collector of Civil War gold or the Liberty Head eagle specialist.
CAC has approved eight in this grade with 12 finer.
