This is an overlooked date, probably on account of the rarity of the branch mint issues produced during this year (at New Orleans and San Francisco). There are an estimated 125-150 known 1859-P eagles, mostly in the EF40 to AU53 range. Properly graded AU58′s are rare and undervalued. Just three Uncirculated pieces are known to me including a PCGS MS62 which brought a record-setting $47,000 as Heritage 4/14: 5770.

This light yellow gold slider shows no real wear but has enough friction and bagmarks to rightfully merit a 58 grade. None of these marks are deep or detracting and the overall eye appeal for this piece is far above average for the date.

A non-CAC NGC AU58 example sold for $3,002 as Heritage 2/14: 5393. The NGC population figures for AU58′s are well inflated by resubmissions and properly graded examples are quite scarce.

If available, an Uncirculated 1859 eagle would cost in the five figures, making this choice slider an especially good value.

CAC has approved one in this grade and none finer.
