After the 1854-S, the 1857-S is the most available early eagle from the San Francisco mint but this date is reasonably difficult to find in properly graded EF45 and it is rare in AU with natural color and surfaces.
This is a high end coin for the grade with some remaining luster on both sides and attractive reddish color at the borders. Some handling marks are visible on both sides with the most noticeable being a reeding mark near star twelve on the obverse.
Heritage 12/13: 5125, graded EF40 by PCGS and not approved by CAC sold for a strong $2,820 and it was clearly inferior to the present example. No PCGS EF45 1857-S eagle has sold at auction in well over a decade.
CAC has approved this one example in EF45 with five finer.
