Of the 9,000 struck, fewer than 100 1855-S eagles exist and most are well-worn as this issue saw extensive use in the booming Gold Rush economy of Northern California.
This example, while well worn, appears nicer than the assigned grade and shows detail more consistent with a VF30 grade. The color is a light yellowish-gold and the wear is even on both sides. Only a few light marks can be seen with the naked eye.
PCGS has graded two 1855-S eagles in VF20 and together they represent four auction appearances over the last decade.
An affordable and downright historic early eagle from the San Francisco mint.
