The 1855-S is the rarest early date eagle from this mint and it compares favorably with the 1860-S as the rarest SF eagle struck prior to the Civil War. Of the 9,000 struck around 60-70 are known with nearly all in the VF-EF range. This date is unknown in Uncirculated and very rare in properly graded AU grades.
This medium orange-gold example has enough remaining luster to contemplate grading it as a 50 but it is a little too flat at the centers to do so such. That said, it is choice for the grade and for the date with fewer marks than usual and good overall eye appeal.
The last NGC EF45 example of this date to sell at auction brought $3,290 as Heritage 1/14: 6861 and it was the first 1855-S in this grade to sell since late 2011.
Despite the increased awareness of this series, the 1855-S remains an undervalued early issue San Francisco eagle and an excellent value in my opinion.
