GEM SLIDER.

The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the first eagle from this mint. It is common in grades up to AU53 and only moderately scarce in AU55 but properly graded AU58 coins are scarce and not seen finer with any regularity. Most examples in AU58 holders are abraded and dull.

This is a gem slider with the naked eye appearance of an MS63. The luster is bright and intense and just a slight amount of rubbing on the surfaces–probably bag friction as opposed to wear–can be seen on the high spots. Unlike most 1854-S eagles, this piece has hardly any abrasions and it is extremely well struck. They eye appeal is excellent and I have handled only one significantly finer 1854-S eagle (a CAC approved PCGS MS61) in the last few years.

Only one PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since 2002.

This is an essentially unimprovable example which is destined for a high quality set of San Francisco eagles.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with one finer (MS61)
