VERY RARE CHOICE AU 1865 QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

While not as rare as the Proof-only 1863 or the 1864, the 1865 is still a very difficult issue to locate with an estimated three to four dozen known from the original mintage of just 1,520 business strikes. This date is unique in Uncirculated (a PCGS MS63 which I sold to a Kansas collector over a decade ago) and most of the pieces in AU holders are not choice.

This is likely the best AU55 1865 quarter eagles in existence and it rivals the few which I have seen or handled in AU58. This example is lightly worn and well defined with considerable semi-prooflike surface still intact. The color is a natural russet with deeper magenta hues at the borders. Most 1865 quarter eagles are bright and "marky" and this piece is a notable exception.

No AU55 1865 quarter eagle has sold since 2013. Heritage 2/14: 5310 was graded NGC AU58 and while nice, it was dipped and didn't sticker at CAC.

This coin is doubly significant as a rarity for Civil War collectors and for Liberty Head quarter eagle specialists.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU55 with none finer.
