A total of 5,000 business strike three dollar gold pieces were made in 1863 and this date is more available than the 1864 and 1865 but around equal in rarity to the 1861 and 1862. Most 1863 three dollar gold pieces are seen with disturbances on the surfaces and have a bright appearance from having been cleaned.
This deep russet example is given additional character by bands of electric reddish-gold color about the borders. The surfaces show some old marks which are nicely concealed by the natural toning. As usual, there are central clashmarks on both sides.
There has been but a single AU53 example of this date to sell at auction since November 2013 and it brought $3,819 as Heritage 2/14: 5248.
This is the best available quality for this popular Civil War date at under $4,000.
