Only four issues in this series were made at the San Francisco mint. The 1857-S is a scarce issue in EF and higher grades and nearly every example I see in EF40 and 45 holders is unattractive.
This choice, original piece is very evenly worn with deep natural green-gold color which are contrasted by the presence of some natural dirt in the recesses. The surfaces are immaculate and this is unusual for an issue which is typically seen with deep, detracting marks.
No CAC approved EF40 1857-S Three Dollar Gold piece has ever sold at auction.
An affordable branch mint issue and an undervalued date in my opinion.
CAC has approved one in this grade with 15 finer.
