The 1856-S is by far the most common of the four collectible three dollar gold pieces from this mint. It is available in EF45 to AU55 grades although nice mid-range AU’s are not found with the degree of regularity they were a few years ago.
This piece has been off the market since it last sold in 1987. It is choice and original with medium russet golden color and some luster on both sides. There are a few small marks on both sides, none of which are inconsistent with the assigned grade.
There have been three AU53s sold at auction in 2013 with the most recent being an NGC coin, offered as Heritage 4/13: 5644, which brought $2,468.
A nice example and of interest to the sophisticated collector who is interested in well-pedigreed American gold coins.
