The 1855 is generally lumped with the 1854 as a common date but it is considerably scarcer. Properly graded MS63′s are scarce and in anything approaching MS65, the 1855 is extremely rare.
This is a very high end coin which certainly could have been graded MS63+. It has never been dipped or brightened and it shows natural medium green-gold central color with splashes of orange-gold at the borders. There are just a few small, stray abrasions in the fields but the luster is satiny and the eye appeal is excellent.
A coin of similar quality but without a CAC sticker realized $6,169 as Heritage 2/14: 5333.
This would be a perfect type coin for the collector who wants a nice Three Dollar gold piece but prefers a better date than an 1854.
CAC has approved four in this grade with seven finer.
