ATTRACTIVE CHOICE AU53 1854-O THREE DOLLAR

The 1854-O is numismatically significant as the only three dollar gold piece from New Orleans. It is far more affordable than its counterpart the 1854-D and more available as well. Of the “219″ pieces graded AU53 by PCGS and NGC combined (this figure is way inflated by resubmissions) probably no more than 10% of the actual coins are choice and original.

This outstanding, fresh example is extremely well struck, especially on the obverse. Both sides show nice natural green-gold and light orange color which is totally right for the issue and indicates originality. Some luster is visible and there is an absence of detracting marks. I have seen numerous inferior 1854-O threes in AU55 holders.

Only two PCGS AU53 examples of this date have sold at auction since 2013 and neither was CAC approved; one brought $4,994 as Stacks Bowers 10/14: 5356 while the other realized $5,288 as Heritage 2/14: 5332.

In my opinion, AU53 is the best value grade for this issue and you would have to look long and hard to find a nicer AU53 than this coin!

CAC has approved nine in this grade and 14 finer (seven in 55 and seven in 58).
