The 1854-O three dollar is numismatically significant as a one-year type. It is seen fairly often in EF40 to AU50 but it is scarce in properly graded AU53 and above, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the nicest AU53 examples of this date that I have offered. It shows deep, even natural russet toning on the obverse and reverse with very choice surfaces and a good deal of underlying luster. I have seen vastly inferior 1854-O three dollar gold pieces in AU55 holders and this piece has excellent overall eye appeal for the date and grade.
The last PCGS AU53 to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 10/14: 5356 which realized $4,994. That coin, while nice for the grade, was not approved by CAC.
The combined PCGS/NGC population for this date in AU53 is nearly 200 yet only nine have been approved by CAC. It is likely that this percentage will remain at less than 10% even as more and more coins are submitted to CAC.
