A total of 165 Proof quarter eagles were made in 1913; the survival rate is around 50% for this issue, meaning that around 80 or so are known. Most are in the PR65 to PR66 range but most have been conserved and lack the character which this lower graded piece displays.

This piece shows superb deep natural color and it clearly lacks the “washed out” appearance which is characteristic of conserved 1913 Matte Proof coinage. A small hard-to-see scratch from the 2:00 rim into the headdress on the obverse removes this coin from a significantly higher grade level and I personally think this eye appeal blows away most examples I see in PR65 and even PR66 holders.

No PR64 1913 quarter eagle has sold at auction since July 2003.

The price point and rarity of this coin, combined with the PCGS/CAC “bells and whistles” makes it an irresistible piece for the collector who has always wanted a nice Matte Proof quarter eagle but who can’t afford to purchase a Superb Gem.

CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.
