A total of 119 Proofs were struck. Of these around half exist today with most in the PR63 to PR65 range. Gem Proof 1895 quarter eagles are very rare, especially so with full cameo contrast. The present example is certainly among the finest known.

This is an amazing Superb Gem with a full “black and white” appearance due to heavily frosted devices contrasted by extremely deep watery fields. The coin itself is essentially “as struck” with no hairlines or mint-made imperfections and nothing on the cheek of Liberty which interrupts the frost. It is the single best Proof 1895 quarter eagle I have seen or owned and it would certainly qualify in the Condition Census for the date.

The most recent auction comparable for a CAC-approved PCGS PR66 DCAM quarter eagle is Heritage 2/12: 4667 which sold for $29,900. While very nice for the grade, it didn’t show the great eye appeal that the present example has.
