The 1890 is not as scarce as its low mintage of 8,720 would suggest but most of the survivors are in the AU55 to MS62 range. Properly graded MS64′s are very scarce and Gems are rare. I have only handled a few 1890 quarter eagles which were choice than the present example.
This piece is notably original with clean, frosty surfaces covered by medium natural orange-gold toning. The surfaces suggest a Gem but there is not quite enough “blast” for this coin to be in a 65 holder. Still, it represents premium quality for the date and grade.
The last PCGS MS64 example with CAC approval to sell at auction realized $3,819 as Heritage 6/13: 5590.
If you can find one, a PCGS MS65 is likely to cost $7,500-8,500+ and with CAC approval, figure closer to $10,000. This makes a nice MS64 seem like particularly good value.
CAC has approved four in this grade with only one finer.
