The 1876-S is the last scarce issue quarter eagle from this mint. More survive than one might expect from an original mintage of just 5,000 but this date is scarce in Uncirculated with around two dozen or so known.
This nice, frosty example lacks any of the rub typically seen on coins graded MS61 and it displays excellent rose color atop full mint luster. A small obverse scratch over Liberty’s head precludes a grade of at least MS62 if not MS63; the reverse is close to Gem on its own merits.
Three PCGS MS61 1876-S quarter eagles have sold at auction between October 2011 and the present and they realized $2,664, $2,760 and $2,760, respectively.
A nice example of a scarce, undervalued date.
