Only 5,320 business strike quarter eagles were struck at the Philadelphia mint in 1871 and fewer than 200 are known today, mostly in EF and AU grades. This date is a bit more prevalent in Uncirculated than other P mint quarter eagles of the 1867-1872 range but it is still rare with around 15 or so known.

This frosty example is strictly “new” with no wear seen on the high spots. The color is a pleasing medium orange-gold with areas of darker russet around the date and some of the stars.

Two PCGS MS61′s have sold at auction since April 2012. The last was a “rubby” piece which brought $1,880 as Heritage 2/14: 5200.

An undervalued issue as are so many P mint quarter eagles from this era.
