Only 5,320 business strikes of this date were produced. There was a small hoard of these at one time and Mint State survivors are more plentiful than one might expect with as many as 15-20 known. The best 1871 quarter eagle is the superb Childs:606 coin, graded MS65 by PCGS, which later sold in 2007 for $27,025.
This borderline Gem shows very frosty luster beneath rich rose-gold and pale green colors. There are a few small scuffs which limit the grade but this is a remarkable coin for a quarter eagle of this era.
The last MS64 example to sell at auction was Heritage 6/06: 3052 where a PCGS coin was purchased for $7,800.
This Condition Census 1871 quarter eagle is exceeded only by two or three other coins, all of which are placed in tightly-held private collections. An important coin for the specialist.
