Between 125 and 150 1870-S quarter eagles are known from an original mintage of 16,000. This date is usually seen in EF40 to AU50 grades and properly graded AU58s are very scarce. I doubt if more than six to nine are known in Uncirculated.
This gem slider shows totally original rich russet-gold color with some deeper overtones on the reverse. There seems to be not actual wear but there is just enough rub on the high spots to understand the assigned grade. The surfaces are clean, the strike is hammered and the eye appeal is 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. In case you can’t tell, I really like this coin!
Two APR’s exist for PCGS AU58 1870-S quarter eagles with CAC approval. Heritage 9/13: 5089 realized $2,585 while Heritage 9/10: 5215 brought $2,990.
In my opinion, there are few areas in rare date gold collecting which offer better value than San Francisco quarter eagles.
CAC has approved four in this grade with just one finer (MS63).
