The Philadelphia quarter eagles struck from 1867 through 1872 are all low mintage issues but they are undervalued as business strikes. The 1870 has a mintage of just 4,520 coins and it is most typically seen in the EF40 to AU53 range. It is very rare in properly graded Uncirculated with probably no more than seven to nine known, nearly all of which are in the MS60 to MS62 range.

This example is slightly prooflike on the obverse and frosty on the reverse with light yellow-gold color touched by a blush of rose. It is very well struck and lightly abraded with reasonably clean fields on the obverse but some scuffs on the reverse.

The last MS61 example to sell at auction was an NGC coin which was ex Heritage 9/13: 5288. It sold for $3,819.  A total of four coins in this grade have sold since early 2009. and this includes some reappearances.

Another good value at less than $4,000.
