Fewer than 200 1867-S quarter eagles are known from an original mintage of 28,000. This date is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and it is very rare in Uncirculated with probably fewer than 10 known.
This well struck, lustrous example is notable for its very attractive deep orange-gold color which can be seen on the obverse and the reverse. A few scattered marks can be seen in the obverse fields.
Since the middle of 2010, only three PCGS AU55 1867-S quarter eagles have sold at auction (none approved by CAC) and these brought $1,430, $1,495 and $1,495.
CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
