With the exception of the 1865-S, all of the Civil War quarter eagles from the San Francisco mint are very scarce and the 1861-S is no exception. Of the 24,000 struck it is likely that fewer than 100 exist and most are in the EF40 to AU50 range.
This pleasing example shows rich natural russet and honey-gold colors, in similar hues, on the obverse and the reverse. It shows a typical strike with some weakness at the centers but the surfaces are clean and free of significant detracting marks. This issue is very hard to find with natural color and choice surfaces.
The last NGC AU53 to sell at auction was ex Heritage 9/13: 5083 at $3,055. Only five examples graded AU53 have traded at auction in the last decade.
An affordable yet well above average example of this popular, scarce Civil War quarter eagle.
