The 1860-S is a scarce, underappreciated San Francisco quarter eagle. An estimated 125 or so exist from the mintage of 35,600 and most are in the EF40 to AU53 grade range. Properly graded AU58′s are rare and there are an estimated six or so known in Uncirculated, the finest of which is a single PCGS MS64 (ex Heritage 2011 FUN: 5030 at $25,300).

This lustrous slider is well detailed and shows light friction on the high spots. It is likely that this coin never entered circulation and the aforementioned friction was caused by contact with other coins while loose in a bag. There are a few small copper spots at the upper obverse which do not detract.

Only two PCGS AU58 1860-S quarter eagles have crossed the auction block since 2000. The last one brought $1,840 as Heritage 12/11: 4422.
