RARE UNCIRCULATED 1859-S QUARTER EAGLE
The 1859-S is one of the scarcer quarter eagles from the San Francisco mint with around 100 pieces known. There are an estimated six or seven extent in Uncirculated including a single Gem, graded MS65 by PCGS.
This strictly Uncirculated example is frosty and has the soft luster characteristic of this date. Both sides are lightly marked and show nice medium yellow-gold color shading to orange-gold. There is some weakness of strike at the centers and, as always, the mintmark is large and somewhat “blobby” in appearance.
Two separate MS61 1859-S quarter eagles, both graded by PCGS, were sold in 2014: this piece (see below for full pedigree information) and an example sold twice by Heritage at $4,847 and $4,994.
A nice coin and good value for the advanced collector of San Francisco quarter eagles.
Ex Great Collections 3/9/14 sale, where it brought $6,050.
