A few hundred examples of this date are known from an original mintage of 15,200. As with all gold coins dated 1859-S, the quarter eagles from this year/mint were heavily melted and those which have survived tend to show heavy wear from commercial use. In AU55 to AU58, this is a scarce date and it is quite rare in Mint State.
This minimally worn example has close to full luster with just a few breaks in the fields. The color is a light yellow-gold with a hint of reddish-gold on the reverse. The strike is better than average for the issue with full details on the eagle’s legs and wings. There are some scattered marks in the fields but none are deep or serious and the wear is confined to the cheek and left obverse field.
There have been four auction records for NGC AU58′s since the beginning of 2010, all devoid of CAC approval. Prices range from a low of $2,013 to a high of $2,616.
In this price range, it is hard to imagine a much scarcer date than the 1859-S quarter eagle.
