The 1859-D is numismatically significant as the final year in which quarter eagles were produced at the Dahlonega mint. Only 2,244 were made but this issue is a bit more available than this low figure would suggest. This date is not easy to locate in affordable collector grades.
This handsome russet-gold example has a very natural appearance with even wear on both sides, good details and problem-free surfaces. When typically available in EF grades, this date tends to come with bright surfaces and poor overall eye appeal.
Only two PCGS EF45′s have sold at public auction since 2001.
This is the nicest collector quality 1859-D quarter eagle I have handled in some time.
