The 1856-S is numismatically significant as the first collectable quarter eagle from the newly-founded San Francisco mint. It is scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in full Uncirculated with around a dozen known including at least three gems.
This choice slider has the luster and appearance of an MS62 to MS63 coin but there is just a touch of rub on the obverse high spots. The satiny surfaces are clean and undisturbed with nice rose and orange-gold hints.
The only CAC approved 1856-S quarter eagle to sell in recent years was Heritage 2/14: 5192, graded by PCGS, which was very choice and brought a strong $2,703 as a result.
A nice coin for the SF quarter eagle specialist.
CAC has approved nine in this grade (this figure seems inflated) with four finer.
