The 1893-CC is numismatically significant as the final Carson City double eagle as the mint closed later in the year. Only 18,402 were struck and this date has an interesting grade distribution as it is almost never seen below AU50 or above MS62. Examples with original color and surfaces have become hard to locate.
This piece was recently sourced from Europe and it shows an obvious “Euro” coloration with dark green-gold fields contrasted by deeper highlights. Very few examples of this date display this sort of color as most are brighter and many show extensive copper spotting.
Heritage 2/14: 5437, graded AU55 by PCGS, sold reasonably at $5,815. A choice NGC AU55 sold for $7,188 as Heritage 1/12: 6718.
