The 1891-CC is the rarest “late date” double eagle from this mint. Only 5,000 were made and just a few hundred are known. Unlike the other CC double eagles from this era, the 1891-CC seems to have actually circulated and most survivors are in the EF40-AU50 range. Properly graded AU55′s are rare and this is a very rare and expensive issue in full Mint State.
This is an exceptional example for the grade with a considerable amount of mint luster showing below light natural green-gold color. As always, there is some lightness of strike on the obverse stars but the surfaces of this coin are exceptionally clean and lack the abrasions so common to the issue.
No PCGS AU55′s have sold at auction since March 2013. A non-CAC NGC AU58, which was inferior in quality to the present example, realized $36,719 as Heritage 3/14: 30486.
CAC has approved five in this grade with eight finer.
