The 1890-CC is among the more available CC double eagles, which makes it ideal for type purposes. It is becoming harder and harder to find in the higher AU grades with natural color and choice surfaces.
This lightly worn, lustrous example shows soft natural orange-gold color which is heaviest at the reverse border. There are a few small marks on the cheek of Liberty and a few abrasions near stars three and four on the obverse.
The last three auction records for AU55 examples of this date–all for non-CAC pieces–occurred in February 2014 and were $4,994, $4,700 and $4,700, respectively.
CAC has approved 32 in this grade with 42 finer.
