The 1885-CC is one of the scarcer double eagles from this mint and the original mintage figure is a paltry 9,450 coins. It is an issue that didn’t see extensive circulation, so it is seldom found in collector grades. Nice EF examples are very infrequnetly offered for sale and, in my opinion, the 1885-CC is extremely undervalued in this grade especially when you consider its current price in relation to other comparable issues such as the 1873-CC, 1877-CC and 1891-CC.

This light green-gold example is evenly worn with more luster than one might expect from the assigned grade. It is well detailed and has basically choice surfaces with deep or especially problematic marks. A tiny obverse rim bump at 11:00 is probably the result of contact from another coin while loose in a bag.

No EF45 examples of this date were offered for sale at auction in 2012. In 2011, two coins, both graded by PCGS, were sold and they realized $5,980 and $4,888, respectively. The market for CC double eagles has, of course,  increased considerably since then and there is strong demand for better date such as the 1885-CC.

It is extremely hard to locate 1885-CC double eagles for less than $7,500 in today’s market and this coin should see a strong degree of interest from collectors.
