The 1884-CC is among the more available Carson City double eagles of the Type Three design. It is most often seen in the EF45 to AU55 grade range and lower end Uncirculated coins, while not exactly rare, are not plentiful; especially in today’s market. The 1884-CC becomes rare in MS62 and it is seldom seen above this.

This is a highly attractive coin for the grade with full, frosty luster and lovely rich green-gold and orange color, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. Unlike most CC double eagles graded MS61, this coin shows no wear and it is minimally abraded with an almost total absence of deep, detracting marks. In fact, as far as I can tell, the only thing keeping this coin from strong consideration at the MS62 level are a few small ticks in the lower left obverse field.

Heritage 8/13: 5236, graded MS61 by NGC, sold for $11,750. A PCGS MS61, sold as Stacks Bowers 2013 ANA: 5372, brought $11,574. Neither coin was approved by CAC and neither was as choice as the current example.

A perfect higher grade Type Three CC double eagle for the type collector who would like to own one special coin from this mint.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 10 finer.
